among East Africa leading painter of our time whose contribution to
development of art scene cannot be forgotten in a short awhile
The artist who arrived in the Country over 40 years ago had made
history which had attracted both art lovers, scholars and collectors.
Katarikawe made history when he staged at Norfolk towers in Nairobi for over 35 years becoming the first Africa artist to do so
The painter told media early this week that they were directed by
the late Gallery Watatu founder Ruth Schaffuner to stay there with other
artist both Whites but they run away because of high house rent which
for him was a joke because he is among the top selling artist in Eastern
Africa whose paintings goes for million shilling and above
He arrived in Nairobi in late 70s when African painter were
respected because there creation s were nothing more than documenting of
Africa traditions.
Katarikawe first shortly stayed at Helton
Hotel, Princess and moved at numerous city hotels before settling at
Norfolk were he stayed for 35 years by just generating his income from
art work he told media at his new venue of forest road Nairobi
He was residence Gallery Watatu painter until when it was closed
early this year due to poor management but his still document history
through his artistic work.
Before joining Watatu he was at the
original Paa ya Paa founded by Dr Njau at the city center and other
small galleries of the time.
Since then Jak had exhibited at the leading galleries around the
World while his art work had been published in books newspapers and
magazine around the World which are part of his Library among others.
Apart
from that his art work had been collected by top Centers around the
World something which no painter had achieved in this region.
The painter who claims to be dreaming in pictures made a history
by becoming one of the first East African painter to host traveling
exhibition which started in Nairobi before moving to Makarere
University were he started his artist journey from teacher driver to
great artist in the region. later the exhibition moved around Africa
before going back to its original home in German.
