One of the biggest Library in
Sub Sahara and the second to Alexandaria in Egypt in in trouble due to poor
management by the city council of Nairobi.
The Library was closed for
renovation in June last year and up date it is still closed forcing both
researchers and students to move to other
center in East Africa and yet the City Council of Nairobi is yet to tell
readers why to close for so long.
Very interesting front part of
the Library which attract users or over the World had been turned into park by
greedy city council of Nairobi a skaris who pocket the fee

research Mc Millan Library in Nairobi share some view with Alexanderia in one
way or another which Scholars are yet to tell as.
It has been said that Alaxandaria Library was

Mc Millan Memorial Library was
established through Cap.217 of 1931. The City Council took over McMillan
Library in 1962 and the name changed to city council library services.

service and Housing Department and it provides library and information services
to Nairobi Residents. It is located along Banda Street next to Jamia Mosque.

In order to ensure effective
services to the users, the Library is organized into the following
Sub-Sections.
Circulations, reference,
technical, periodicals and serials, children’s sub-section and Africana.
The services provided include
the following:-
- Issue of books or documents for home reading for both adults and children.
- Advisory, Library Services
- User Education
- Field attachment to students of information science.
- Researches Services
- Technical Services
- Referral Services
- Reservation Services
- Inter-Library co-operation
The stock has grown from 1,300
in 1931 to approximately 400,000 books covering a variety of subjects. The book
stock is distributed throughout the various libraries of the city.
The stock consists of books,
periodicals and pictures which are acquired through purchase, gifts and
donation from well wishers.
Library membership is open to
anyone living in Nairobi or residents outside Nairobi who are able to change
their books in person.
Each applicant must obtain a
recommendation from a person holding a responsible position who must sign all
the application forms. Adults make an annual subscription of Kshs.100/= while
children pay Kshs.50/=.
The payment of one subscription
allows a member to borrow one book at a time.
If one wishes to borrow more
books, on must complete the appropriate number of application forms. An
applicant in permanent employment must be recommended by the employer and
foreign visitors by their respective embassies.
In order to extend services to
residential areas of Nairobi, the City Council of Nairobi decided to open
branches of McMillan Library.

In 1990- Waithaka Technical Library( set up by UNICEF)
In 1996-Kayolle( set up by the
City Council of Nairobi)
Very shocking the Library
has not computers and photocopying
machine forcing researchers to carry
documents on Nairobi street when they needs to photocopy
Awork at the Library told media
that the Library was supposed to open
after the just ended general election, but check up by press the place which is
the source of knowledge is still closed, but the front entry still used as parking.
